What is Aikido?

Aikido

Aikido is a martial art with its origins rooted in feudal Japan. Continuing this traditional training today, the martial art of Aikido is practiced to develop a strong sense of awareness, both physically and spiritually and to give the student not only self-defense skills but also the self discipline to control the conflicts one faces in daily situations. Through the dedicated physical practice of the self  defense techniques of Aikido, the students learn to appreciate and understand the mental and spiritual aspects of the art.

The physical movement of Aikido is the embodiment of the principles within this martial art. Negative force is not met with conflict, but joined together-controlled and redirected through the    power of balance and of spiral movements.                 This is the shape of Aikido and the dynamic shape of all things in existence. Aikido movement can only be understood from its roots in universal law, physics and the process of nature. Its sincere study deepens our appreciation for the perfection of natures balance and brings us back into harmony with our environment, with other people and with ourselves.
